The Zambian Government has awarded the contract for the modernisation of the railway connecting Lusaka capital to Ndola, the main industrial and commercial city of the mining province Copperbelt in the north of the country to Italian company DR Ferroviaria.
The railway, which connects the north to the south of the country, has narrow gauge, the final rehabilitation of this railway dating back to the 1940s. The modernisation of the railway will also permit reactivating the railway connection between Zambia and Congo. In the next phase, the line could be extended from Lusaka to Livingstone, from where it would be possible to provide link to existing or future networks from Namibia and Angola.
