SZ, the Czech railway infrastructure manager, has begun the modernisation of Pardubice railway junction to provide better and faster transport services and increased access.
The project is performed by the Pardubice consortium, comprising Eurovia, Chládek a Tintěra, Elektrizace železnic Praha and GJW Praha.
“The modernised station will offer passengers convenient access to all platforms, which can be reached by elevators and escalators. The installation of modern station security system will be a positive from the point of view of railway transport safety. It will be controlled remotely from the Central Dispatching Office in Prague,” Jiří Svoboda, the General Director of SZ said.
The Pardubice railway junction modernisation involves reconstruction and rehabilitation works for all the existing tracks and connections at the station. All the existing platforms will be reconstructed and elevated at a 550m-high above the tracks, being adapted to the trains’ floor level. This will significantly facilitate the passengers’ boarding providing increased access for the passengers with reduced mobility. As part of the project, a new platform, and a barrier-free footbridge for pedestrians will be constructed at the railway station. The barrier-free footbridge which will connect the pre-station area with four platforms.
The station will also be equipped with new lighting, an orientation system for passengers with disabilities and a radio and sound beacons for the blind.
The project also includes the deployment of the ETCS and the modernisation of the automatic train control equipment. Thanks to these modifications, the railway infrastructure of the node will allow trains to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h, from 100 km/h, while in the direction of Rosice nad Labem, the speed will increase to 60 km/h, from 40 km/h currently.
At the station, noise walls will be mounted to ensure quieter rail traffic in the area.
The project has a value of CZK 6.3 billion (EUR 235 million) and is expected to be completed in December 2024. The project is co-financed by the European Union from the Connecting Europe Facility, under the 2019 call. EUR 169.2 million is the total eligible cost, while EUR 148.15 million is the value of the recommended total eligible costs. The SZ requested EUR 143.85 million funding but the EUR 125.93 million is the recommended funding. The EU would cover 85% of the total eligible costs, while the remaining financing will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
The Pardubice rail node is located on the Orient/East-Med and Rhine-Danube TEN-T corridors, or on Rail Transit Corridors I and III (national level), with the joint section of Prague – Ceská Trebová. The project is focused on the completion of modernisation of the railway corridor Praha – Brno.
