light rail contract in Helsinki The winners of a light rail contract in Helsinki were announced as part of the tender for the construction of Kalasatama project.

The project is implemented under the alliance model. Karaatti Alliance comprising by GRK and AFRY Finland will be responsible for the design and construction of the light rail line between Kalasatama and Pasila.

Sweco in alliance with Destia and WSP will provide services to Helsinki City Transport, HKL, for construction of the new Kalasatama LRT.

The development phase of the project is scheduled to start in May and the implementation would start in 2021. It is expected that the line will enter commercial operation in 2024.

“The project contributes to the overall development of the city and the expansion of the sustainable mobility network,” said Mikko Asikainen, Project Manager of Helsinki City Transport HKL.

When completed, the new tram line will offer a smooth connection to the route Nihti-Kalasatama metro station-Vallilanlaakso-Pasila and combines existing tram, metro and train networks.

The new LRT line complements Helsinki’s urban rail network and supports capital’s vision to be become one of the cities with zero impact on the environment.

Under the project, street areas in Nihti will be redesigned, cycling network in Vallilanlaakso will be developed and the existing road network will be improved.

The City Council approved the general plan of the Kalasatama LRT in the summer of 2018.

Currently, Helsinki is planning the expansion of its urban railway system which includes the Crown Bridges LRT project expected to be operational in 2026.

The city is expecting to extend its urban railway transport system, for which EUR 1.85 billion would be invested until 2029.
