PKP Intercity selected Mostostal Warszawa to design and construct a new locomotive depot in Warsaw following a public procurement procedure launched in July.
The project, to be carried out on the premises of the Warszawa Grochów railway siding, includes the construction of the depot, a washing hall, upgrades to the rail traffic control devices, as well as the reconstruction of the existing social buildings, and the reconstruction of the rail traffic control devices. The project also covers the construction of a diagnostics facility for rolling stock including testing the pressure of wheel sets on the rail. As a result, the standard of rolling stock service will be raised and the technological process will be optimised, which will shorten the time it takes to prepare rolling stock for travel.
Mostostal Warszawa met the criteria for evaluating the offers in the procedure, that involved the price and the deadline for developing the design documentation. The contractor submitted a bid with a value of PLN 167.9 million (EUR 39.2 million), which was 20% lower than the amount that PKP Intercity intended to allocate to finance the project.
Mostostal Warszawa will have ten months to prepare design documentation, from contract signing, followed by the launch of construction works expected to be completed in 18 months. The company will be also responsible for obtaining the final building permit, with the proviso that the reconstruction of rail traffic control devices and the construction of a rolling stock diagnostics station, including testing the pressure of wheel sets on the rail. All these activities must be completed by October 31, 2026.
The implementation of the locomotive depot in Warsaw project is co-financed by the EU funds with an agreement signed with the Center for EU Transport Projects (CUPT) in June 2018 for the project “Accelerate comfortably – modernisation of railcars and purchase of locomotives for PKP Intercity”. The Polish rail operator received a subsidy of PLN 251 million (EUR 58.6 million, in current prices).
The project is part of PKP Intercity’s commitment to modernise and expand its facilities as well as its rolling stock renewal strategy. Recently, PKP Intercity announced that EUR 3.8 billion is the total value of the contracted rolling stock contracts with domestic manufacturers and repair and modernisation companies.
