The first passengers took trains at the Warszawa Główna train station opened on March 14, after 24 years of closure. The station provides regional rail links towards Skierniewice and Łowicz. There are also several connections between Polregio and Łódź Agglomeration Railway on the route to Łódź Fabryczna and Koleje Mazowieckie network to Skierniewice, Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Piaseczno, Dobieszyn, Łowicz, Sochaczew.
The opening of the station will allow for scheduled train traffic during the reconstruction of the Warszawa Zachodnia station and works on the cross-city line.
The station will increase the possibilities of rail travel in the area of the Warsaw Railway Junction.
40 trains will be directed by the Warszawa Gdańska station, which is being prepared to receive more passengers. 14 InterCity trains will start or end their travel at the station, while 17 more trains will run via the Warszawa Gdańska station and additionally Warsaw Wschodnia. For the other 9 trains transiting Warsaw, the Warszawa Gdańska station will be the only stop in the capital. The opened station will be the only stop in Warsaw for other 17 trains, while 5 EMUs will run on the suburban cross-city line
There will be escalators on three platforms, which will facilitate the passage and public transport. In mid – 2021, two new footbridges will be ready to be used. There are two new platforms and the lighting, and shelters at the modernised station are installed. Next to the platforms a Kiss & Ride parking facility was constructed.
The project, which was carried out under the “construction works for the cross-city line in Warsaw on the section Warszawa Wschodnia – Warszawa Zachodnia” main project has a value of PLN 87 million (EUR 18.9 million).
The opening of the Warszawa Główna train station is particularly important for the reconstruction of Warsaw West (Warsaw Zachodnia) and the cross-city line.
On March 26, the next stage of works on the construction of the new Warsaw West will begin.The scope of works will extend to two platforms.The works also require the suspension of train traffic on one track of the long-distance line between Warszawa Zachodnia and Warszawa Centralna. The rail infrastructure manager PKP PLK and PKP Intercity have prepared changed routes for long–distance trains running through Warsaw.Travelers and residents will be kept informed of the changes.
