Warsaw selects Škoda for new metro trains

Metro Warszawskie has selected Czech rolling stock manufacturer Škoda to deliver up to 45 metro trains. The consortium of Škoda Transportation and Škoda Vagonka won the contract in competition with other bids from companies such as Stadler, CAF, Konstal consortium which also includes Alstom, and Siemens-Newag consortium.
The bid submitted by Škoda was estimated at PLN 1.3 billion (EUR 302 million).
The first metro train of six wagons will be delivered in the first 20 months after signing the contract. The delivery of the 37 metro trains (222 cars) of the base order will take place in 53 months after signing the contract. Metro Warszawskie has 30 months after signing the contract to opt for the delivery of another eight metro trains (48 cars).
However, the Polish press says the result of the procedure is not definitive and the other rolling stock manufacturers could contest the contract awarding.
The contract is financed from Metro Warszawskie’s own financing sources with some European co-financing.
The tender was announced in 2017.
Metro Warszawskie wants to buy the new rolling stock to serve new sections of the second metro line and to replace the older, Russian trains, still in operation. The two new sections, Will and Targówek, will be ready in 2019.
