Warsaw new metro trains enter passenger trials

The Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski, inaugurated the new metro trains which entered testing rides with passengers on October 28, 2022.

ZTM Warsaw, the public transport of Poland’s capital has received from Škoda Group the fourth of the 37 trainsets under the contract signed in January 2020 worth PLN 1.3 billion (EUR 275.7 million). The contract includes options for up to 45 six-car metro trains which will provide increased comfort for passengers.

“We provide our citizens new trains which are modern, energy efficient and comfortable, specially designed for Warsaw. The acquisition project was possible thanks to the support from the European Union,” Rafał Trzaskowski said.

The procurement of the new trains is funded by the EU under two phases of the project on the construction of the second metro line.

The new 6-car 120-m long train provides increased capacity transporting 1,500 passengers and is designed to be energy efficient while reaching a maximum speed of 90 km/h. Passengers can move freely between carriages similar to the existing Inspiro trains purchased from Siemens Mobility.

The new trains are equipped with monitoring and passenger information system providing details of the journey.

The first metro train arrived in Warsaw this spring and according to the contract, the last one will be delivered by the end of 2023.

The trains will operate on the existing lines as well as on the future sections which are currently being built. In 2019-2022, the city has commissioned 11 new metro stations, 5 of them in 2022. In 2021, Metro Warszawskie has launched a tender for predesign works for the first phase of the Line 3 covering the construction of 8 km and six stations including a branch to the Kozia Górka Technical and Parking station.

The 40 km Warsaw metro system carries 700,000 passengers per day (prior pandemic) with an annual average of 181 million passengers.
