VR Sverige AB has won the Öresundståg purchase contract in southern Sweden. The operation according to the agreement will start in December 2025 and continue until the end of 2030. The contract also includes the maintenance of the train fleet. High quality and insight into the development of rail traffic decided the race in VR’s favor.

VR Sverige AB has won the tender for the contract to purchase Öresundståg in southern Sweden, where traffic will start in December 2025. The customer for the traffic is Öresundståg AB, which is a company jointly owned by six regions – Blekinge, Halland, Kronoberg, Skåne, Kalmar and West Götaland. Öresundståg operates in the Juutinrauma area, which crosses the borders of Denmark and Sweden.

The transport contract won is VR’s fourth after the company expanded to the Swedish market by purchasing Arriva Sweden’s business in the summer of 2022. In May 2024, VR expanded its operations in the country to market-based long-distance transport by purchasing MTR Nordic’s long-distance transport operation MTRX, which now operates on the Stockholm-Göteborg route under the name VR Snabbtåg . In the summer of 2024, VR won the Norrtåg service contract in Sweden’s northernmost counties, where service will start in December 2025.

The value of the five-year purchase traffic contract that has now been won is approximately EUR 105 million per year, and it employs approximately 880 employees.

“Our strengths in this competition were solid digital expertise, investment in personnel experience, and our long experience and vision on the development of rail transport. VR is already strongly present in public transport in southern Sweden – we are a popular employer in the region and we are now continuing to build our reputation as an employer and attract the best talent. Excellent customer service and punctuality of traffic are the keys to increasing the popularity of public transport both here and in Sweden,” saysElisa Markula , CEO of VR.

In accordance with its strategy, VR is looking for profitable growth and experience from a competitive market in Sweden as it prepares for the intensifying rail traffic competition in Finland as well.

The appeal period for the tender ends on October 25, 2024.
