VR Group is planning to invest EUR 250 million to procure new trains which will replace the Sm2 EMUs used on Helsinki’s suburban network.
The acquisition of the new trains will be launched his year and the first trains are expected to enter commercial services in 2024. Company’s plans envisage the replacement of the Sm2 EMUs with modern trains by 2026. Currently, 34 Sm2s EMUs offer transport services in Helsinki area.
The company says that the order will be extended, depending on the railway traffic demand in southern Finland
“We intend to replace the old rolling stock that has come to the end of its life with modern train equipment and we are currently looking for alternatives. The new equipment will improve our customer experience. We have already redesigned our equipment abundantly in recent years. Modern equipment has a significant impact on comfort,” said VR Group CEO Rolf Jansson.
