Victoria’s North East Line project enters new phase

Victorian Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, launched the public consultation on AUD 235 million (USD 178 million) North East Line upgrade project.
The North East line steering committee is finalising the scope of the works and delivery schedule, which will include an independent review of the works by Monash University. The project will enable improved services for north-east Victoria and provide much-needed station upgrades for the communities of Donnybrook and Wallan, two major growth areas, with populations expected to soar in the next two decades.
The project includes track upgrades from Melbourne to Albury/Wodonga to at least Victorian Class 2 standard, supporting infrastructure for VLocity trains, upgrading Donnybrook and Wallan stations and Shepparton freight network planning.
Under the 2017/18 budget, USD 236 million was provided for 39 new VLocity carriages, building on the 48 already funded by the government. This investment also funded a major re-design of VLocity trains, to enable them to run on long-haul services, including on the North East Line.
