Västtrafik buys 40 new trains from Bombardier

Bombardier Transportation Sweden AB will deliver new trains to rail operator Västtrafik (Västra Götaland region, Sweden) after it won a tender for the procurement of 40 high speed trains capable of speeds of up to 200 km/h. The estimated cost is approximately SEK 3.8 billion (372 million euros). Västtrafik has organized the procurement and is responsible for the trains, while the Västra Götaland region is responsible for financing the acquisition.

The trains will be designed to meet tough demands during all seasons and for many years. The EMUs will be equipped with wifi and information systems and will have large flexible areas for wheelchairs, strollers and bicycles. The trains will be approximately 80 meters long and will have about 270 seats each. The units will be finalized and tested in Germany. According to a preliminary plan, the first of the new trains will arrive in Västra Götaland at the end of 2021.

Västtrafik’s goal is to triple rail journeys until 2035 to 130,000 train journeys a day. In order to achieve this goal, it needs to replace old trains and increase capacity.
