The U.S. Federal Railway Administration (FRA) provided USD 326 million funds under the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program and the Special Transport Circumstances Programme for 45 projects in 29 states.
USD 324 million will be used for restoration and initiation projects, remaining projects and one-third of the funds, or USD 118 million were awarded to rural projects.
Under the grants, USD 2 million will be provided to the state of Alaska for flat car electrification project. USD 1.4 million will be used for the installation or conversion of 480/240-volt electrical power capabilities on 28 Alaska Railroad Corporation flatcars to allow temperature control on trailer-hauled freight. Almost USD 922 thousand will finance the procurement of 10 new 89-foot general service flat cars, allowing multiple container configurations and the removal of 16 older, shorter flat cars.
“These investments in intercity passenger and freight rail will benefit surrounding communities, make grade crossings safer and improve service reliability,” said U.S. Transport Secretary Elaine Chao, said.
