The Union of European Railway Industries (UNIFE, acronym for Union des Industries Ferroviaires Européennes) has launched a campaign for the 2024 European Parliament elections.
” As of today, UNIFE begins its #VoteForRail campaign. We urge voters to consider political platforms at the #EuropeanElections in June which:
– Invest in rail solutions
– Encourages growth
– Promotes upskilling
– Drives innovation
– Addresses the challenges in STEM education,” reads a post on UNIFE’s Twitter account.
STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The 2024 European Parliament elections will take place from 6-9 June
This year’s European Parliament elections are scheduled to take place between 6 and 9 June 2024. This is the tenth European Parliament election since the first direct elections in 1979, and the first European Parliament elections since Brexit.
As a result of Brexit, 27 seats in the UK delegation were distributed to other countries in January 2020 (they were elected in 2019 but did not take up their seats immediately), 46 seats were abolished and the total number of MEPs fell from 751 to 705.
This term’s elections are expected to be one of the most controversial in the history of the European Parliament, given the rise of far-right parties in the polls.
In June 2018, the Council agreed to change European electoral law and reform old laws from the 1976 Electoral Act amended in 2002. The new rules include a mandatory 2% electoral threshold for countries with more than 35 seats and rules to prevent voters voting in more than one country. After the law was adopted by the Council, following approval by the European Parliament in July 2018, not all member states ratified the law before the 2019 elections, which were held under the old legislation.
