Ukrzaliznytsia has produced 200 wagon platforms for transport of large containers, as part of the RELINC project. The new platforms, manufactured at Ukrzaliznytsia’s factories, are currently used to organise intermodal transport in connection with EU countries.
Renewing its freight fleet with domestic industry, Ukrzaliznytsia has secured the existing jobs and created new jobs and developed plants’ activities.
“Thanks to the wagon platforms, Ukrainian Railways be able to additionally transport at least 300,000 tonnes of cargo per year,” the company says.
These wagons were provided to Ukrzaliznytsia within the framework of the World Bank’s project ” Repairing Essential Logistics Infrastructure and Network Connectivity’ (RELINC)”, financed by the multi-donor Ukraine Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reform Trust Fund (URTF). To implement the project, a project group was created in the corporate finance department of Ukrzaliznytsia.
The technical inspection and acceptance of the manufactured wagon platforms was carried out by United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) with the participation of independent technical experts, who confirmed the compliance of the platforms manufactured by Ukrzaliznytsia with Ukrainian standards and UN requirements.
Under RELINC, Ukrainian Railways received 89 items of equipment to support rail repair works as well as 200 flat wagons to expand its freight capacity. USD 23 million was the total value of the provided assistance.
Between December 2023 and June 2024, UNOPS has delivered over USD 7 million worth of equipment to Ukrainian Railways under the RELINC project. Funded by the World Bank, the project aims to restore critical rail connections and enhance freight capacity.
By July 2024, a further USD 1.5 million worth of equipment, including tractors, bulldozers, cement mixers and large cargo trucks, have also been delivered.
The (RELINC) project is a USD 50 million initiative in Ukraine funded by the World Bank’s Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reform Trust Fund. Implemented by UNOPS, it aims to provide the State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure and the national railway operator Ukrainian Railways with the means to mitigate the impact of damaged transport networks on the country’s people and economy. This involves delivering a fleet of modular bridges for the Agency, expanding the rolling stock of Ukrainian Railways, and providing vehicles and equipment for railroad repairs. These interventions are expected to improve the resilience of critical logistics chains, which will in turn facilitate recovery and reconstruction.
At the beginning of 2024, Ukrainian Railways announced that manufactured 528 wagons at its Panyutino, Darnitsa and Stryi plants. The state-owned rail company said that it will increase its wagon manufacturing to renew its fleet and to increase its freight capacity.
