Ukraine has completed the first stage of construction of Beskyd tunnel, a railway track through the Carpathians. This is a two-track tunnel on the section Beskyd – Skotarske in the Carpathians.
The tunnel is set to become a new link in the Silk Road connecting Europe and Asia, the vice prime minister Hennady Zubko said.
“The Beskyd tunnel will be the extension of the Silk Road, to which Ukraine has recently joined by launching a container train from the port of Illichivsk in China,” Zubko said during a ceremony marking the completion of the first stage of the tunnel.
The tunnel, which establishes a transport corridor between the city of Lviv and the Hungarian and Slovak borders, will enable Ukraine to unlock its exports and transit potentials.
The total value of the project is estimated at USD 90 million and is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and the commercial operation will be launched in 2018. The project is financed by EBRD, EIB and Ukrzaliznytsya, the Ukraine’s State Railway Company.
