UITP’s Declaration on Climate Leadership was officially recognised by the UN as a leading effort in the fight against climate change at the LPAA (Lima Paris Action Agenda) for transport day at COP 21. In addition, UITP presented its Central and Eastern Europe Declaration on climate leadership signed by 25 public transport leaders from Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) showing their willingness to contribute to taking action on climate change.
The LPAA sent a clear signal to UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Parties on the public transport sector’s commitment to a low carbon future and demonstrated the achievements of major initiatives made by UITP members linked to the Declaration.
The UITP Declaration on Climate Leadership supports UITP’s goal of doubling the modal share of public transport by 2025. This would mean urban transport emissions being in line with the 2 degree goal, but would also foster economic growth, social inclusion and mobility solutions that benefit everyone. The Declaration, containing 350 pledges, confirms public transport’s responsibility to act on climate change, with actions giving a greater role to public transport in mobility and driving down emissions. On the occasion of the LPAA day for transport, UITP also released its Climate Action Report highlighting the implementation of the commitments made last year.
In support of the LPAA day for transport, UITP officially launched a new commitment of 125 of its members, entitled the UITP Sustainability Charter. Signatories to the Charter can play a key role in facilitating action beyond COP 21 by helping public transport players build links between their business strategies and the delivery of the new global sustainable development agenda, which will be essential in the fight against climate change.
