Stadler Rail engaged TSA to develop and construct a new motor generation for the high-speed platform EC 250. In the scope of this initial order, 29 vehicles for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) will be equipped with TSA motors. The units are to operate with a top speed of 250 km/h. The new trains will be used from the end of 2019 onwards in Switzerland and Italy, starting on the route between Zürich/Basel and Milan.
In the long run the ICN and ETR 610 tilting trains will be replaced by the new trains in order to be used in the new Gotthard tunnel. Stadler chose the brand name ‘Giruno’ for the EC 250 (derived from the Romansh word girùn meaning „buteo“).
