TriMet introduces new type 6 MAX trains

On January 16, Portland’s TriMet launched its new Type 6 MAX trains, marking a significant step forward in the light rail system. Two of the advanced vehicles began service during the morning commute, departing from the Ruby Junction Rail Operating Facility. Over the coming months, all 30 Type 6 trains will gradually enter service across the MAX network, enhancing reliability and passenger experience.

The Type 6 trains, built by Siemens Mobility, retain the familiar exterior design of their predecessors but offer substantial upgrades inside:

  • Digital Displays: New video-enabled destination screens provide real-time information and special messages.
  • Improved Accessibility: LED door indicators show status (green, yellow, or red), enhancing boarding ease.
  • Comfort Enhancements: Upgraded lighting and improved temperature control systems adapt to seasonal changes.
  • Predictive Maintenance: Advanced sensors enable proactive repairs, reducing service disruptions.
  • Advanced Security: High-resolution cameras with wireless capabilities improve onboard safety.

Each train can be identified by a three-digit number beginning with “6,” visible on the exterior and near the operator’s cab.

The Type 6 trains signify the retirement of the first-generation Type 1 trains, which have been in operation since 1986. Some Type 1 trains have exceeded 2 million miles—equivalent to 80 trips around the Earth’s equator. These older vehicles will be phased out in 2025, with one donated to the Oregon Electric Railway Museum for preservation.

The new trains are part of TriMet’s broader efforts to enhance the MAX system. Recent projects, like the “A Better Red” MAX extension to Hillsboro, completed in August 2024, aim to improve travel times and network reliability.

TriMet is also committed to maintaining a safe and clean transit environment, with increased cleaning operations, expanded safety personnel, and enhanced security measures like blue-light phones and a 24-hour reporting line.
