Port of Trieste will receive a EUR 39 million loan from the European Investment Bank for railway expansion project, which has a total value of EUR 65 million.
The project comprises railway capacity expansion and operations enhancement at the port by redesigning the main railway marshalling yard and rehabilitating existing internal railways. The project increases rail capacity and efficiency of the railway infrastructure at the Port of Trieste and allows the port to meet cargo transport demand from industry and consumers in the region and reduces overall logistic costs.
Under the CEF 2017 call, the port authority has received a EUR 6.54 million funding to upgrade the railway infrastructure of the port of Trieste, including the Campo Marzio, Aquilinia and Scalo Legnami stations, as well as the last mile interconnections among them. EUR 32.7 million were the total eligible costs.
The project is to improve the hinterland accessibility and multimodal connections of the port of Trieste in order to increase the train capacity of the marshalling yard by 80% and to increase the speed of marshalling operations on average by 35%, and 70% for Pier 7. The project will also allow 750 metres long trains, thus increasing the train length by 35% and will ensure full IT interoperability with port railway stakeholders.
The project envisages infrastructure works on the layout of the port shunting area, full automation of the manoeuvres and coordination with RFI automated system by deployment of a new signalling system and the deployment of the soft infrastructures to ensure interoperability with stakeholders.
The railway services and links play a vital role in the logistics chain. Trieste is the most important railway port in Southern Europe, with 70 km of track serving all the docks and making it possible to assemble freight trains directly in the various terminals.
Port’s rail services are available with different frequencies to Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Switzerland and the destinations for domestic connections are Milan Certosa and Padua/ Bologna.
