Trials starts for Lahore’s first metro line

Punjab Minister of Transport, Jahanzaib Khan Khichi, has inaugurated the trial test run on Lahore’s Orange metro line, from Dera Gujran to the Ali Town.

The 25-km metro line is served by 26 stations, including 2 underground and 24 elevated stations.

The line is operated by 27 five-car trains able to run at speeds of 80 km/h. The line’s depot is situated at Dera Gujran.

It is expected that in March 2020, the line will enter commercial operation, being daily used by 250,000 passengers. By 2023, the line will transport 300,000 passengers per day.

The project, which is part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), neede a USD 1.6 billion investment. In 2014, Export-Import Bank of China and Pakistan signed a MoU to provide a USD 1.5 billion funding for the project.

The project was implemented by a joint venture comprising China Railway Corporation and China North Industries Corporation.
