Trenitalia organises EUR 1.6 billion tender to purchase 135 trains

After last year’s unssucessful attempt to purchase up to 500 electric and diesel trains, Italy’s national rail operator, Trenitalia, has launched a tender for a EUR 1.6 billion framework contract to supply up to 135 diesel-electric passenger trains and to maintain them for 15 years.

Barbara Morgante, managing director of Trenitalia announces that a new call, worth EUR 1.6 billion, was published for the purchase of 135 diesel trains, which will be used along the non-electrified lines of the Italian regions. Optionally, the trains could be equipped with ERTMS. Tenders must be submitted to Trenitalia by July 5th.

The framework contract will be valid for four years with an option to extend it by another two years. Trenitalia will guarantee to purchase 70 trains, 30 of which will be ordered when the framework contract is signed.

Among the first regions that could benefit from the new trains are Sicily, Tuscany and Sardinia. The project will be marked by the renewal of its service contract with Trenitalia. In Sicily, about 42% of the lines are not electrified, in Tuscany about a third while in Sardinia 100% of the rail network.
