Transport for London and Bombardier sign contract for new trains

AventraTransport for London (TfL) confirmed that, following the completion of a 10 day standstill period, it has signed a contract with Bombardier to build a new fleet of trains which will come into service from 2018. The agreement includes two contracts on manufacturing and supply that covers the design, manufacture, commissioning and entry into service of 180 new vehicles, and the second is a 35-year train services agreement providing maintenance for the new vehicles. The 45 Aventra trains will feature an innovative design with optimised performance, including reduced weight, energy consumption.
Together the contracts are valued at approximately GBP 358 million (EUR 505 million). In addition to the base contracts, the contracts also include an option for up to 24 additional trains and another to extend the maintenance support for five-years.
The new trains will have similar features to the existing London Overground fleet including walk-through carriages, air-conditioning and improved accessibility. The new trains will operate on the Liverpool Street to Enfield Town, Cheshunt (via Seven Sisters) and Chingford routes, which became part of the TfL network in May, as well as on the routes between Barking and Gospel Oak and between Romford and Upminster. It will also enable London Overground to improve service frequencies on other routes.
