Metrolink will soon launch the work to replace tram tracks in Manchester city centre, part of the planned GBP 147 million (EUR 177.3 million) package to maintain, upgrade and improve the Metrolink network up to 2027.
The work, at York Street, is scheduled to take place in the first two weeks of March, when no trams will run from St Peter’s Square to Market Street or Piccadilly Gardens while it is carried out.
Ashton-under-Lyne services will operate to Victoria, calling at Piccadilly, Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street and Shudehill en-route. Other cross-city services will divert via Exchange Square.
Passengers can still cross the city by changing trams at Victoria or disembark at Deansgate-Castlefield to use free bus services to reach stops across the city centre. There will also be a signed walking route to direct people between St Peter’s Square, Market Street and Piccadilly Gardens.
Further improvement of tram tracks in Manchester will be carried out in different locations later this year including at High Street, Church Street, Portland Street, Aytoun Street and Piccadilly Gardens.
The rolling programme of work will ensure the network keeps on delivering safe, reliable and accessible services for millions more people in the future.
“Metrolink is the biggest light rail system in the country, so it’s critically important that we keep investing in the network and making sure it remains a safe, reliable and accessible way to get around Greater Manchester well into the future,” Ian Davies, TfGM’s Interim Network Director for Metrolink, said.
The upgrade and improvements of tram tracks are funded by the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.
In 2024, more than GBP 20 million (EUR 24 million) was invested in tram improvement works across Greater Manchester, including at Piccadilly Gardens, London Road and Market Street, with all projects delivered on time and on budget.
