Timișoara Municipality is currently working on a project for the procurement of new trams with support from European funding. “2018 will be an important step forward for Timisoara public transport services”, said the Mayor of Timisoara, Nicolae Robu.
Some time ago, the representatives of Timisoara Municipality announced their intention to buy 30 new trams, of which 15 in the first phase.
“Trams are very expensive, around EUR 2 million per unit. We need new trams, but we cannot block huge amounts of money”, said the Mayor of Timisoara. He added that the municipality is trying to get European financing, at least for part of the tram procurement amount.
“Unfortunately, we will also have to operate older trams, at least until we have enough new trams. We are interested in buying new trams using European funds. Specific financing calls are currently prepared”, added Nicolae Robu.
As of July 1st, Timișoara will resume traffic on tram line 6 improving mobility in the city. Trams on line 6 will pass through Traian Square, 700 Square, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Bălcescu, Banatul and Traian squares.
Also, as of June, Timișoara Public Transport Company (STPT) has a new leader. Sorin Supuran is the new Director General, while Nicolae Bitea is the new Deputy Director.
Currently, Timisoara has a fleet of 60 trams, of which 23 have already been upgraded (Armonia trams), while other seven are currently modernised in the production units of Romanian companies, Astra Vagoane Călători and Electroputere VFU Pașcani.
