Map of the future metro network in Belgrade, with the latest proposals designed in 2018

The metro network in the Serbian capital of Belgrade will be built in two stages, the first one is scheduled to begin in 2020. The announcement was made within the adoption of the General Regulation Plan of Belgrade railway systems, by the Belgrade Municipality.
“According to this Plan, two metro lines and four suburban railway lines (called BG Voz) will be built, all of which are to be integrated into a single system. The cost of the first metro line is estimated at EUR 1.3 billion, while the entire project (for the two metro lines) is estimated at a cost of EUR 4 billion,” Goran Vesic, deputy mayor of Belgrade, said.
The length of the first metro line, from Makisko Polje to Panchevachki Bridge, will be 22.5 kilometres. The length of the second metro line will be 19.8 kilometres. Foreign companies, including French and Russian companies, will take part in this project. The municipality estimates that the works for the entire metro network will last for 7 years, which means that the network will be fully operational in 2027.
The construction of the metro in Belgrade will also ensure the rail connection with “Nikola Tesla” airport.
In addition, the municipality also announces that the tram network will be extended to Zemun, Makisko Polje, via the city centre. In this respect, feasibility studies have already been prepared.
Belgrade has a population of more than 1.6 million inhabitants, being at the same time, by the number of population, the largest European city without a fast rail network.
