Thales wins contract to modernise Brescia metro system

Brescia Metro

Brescia Metro awarded Thales a contract to provide and install the train-to-ground broadband data communication solution. The company will deliver integrated CCTV encoder for digitizing analog video signals, a Wi-Fi link connecting the train to the ground through on-board equipment and trackside access-points, and a dedicated data network to connect the Wi-Fi access-point to the Operations Control Centre. Thales also provides in the Control Centre, the software platform for video surveillance and diagnostics purposes.

The new broadband communication system installed across the metro network allows near real-time transmission of image data from on-board CCTV cameras to the Control Centre, and the capacity to share this video content with other security operators. The level of passenger security on board trains will therefore dramatically improve.

The project has already started, and work completion is scheduled for February 2022.

Thales and Brescia Infrastructure are collaborating since 2004 with activities covering the maintenance of the systems to accompany the technological evolution of the infrastructure, ensuring an ever-increasing level of safety for passengers. This long-term partnership has allowed Thales to meet additional needs required by the company involving the infrastructure and other specific solutions. This covered the optimisation of the existing architecture to minimize the number of access points, while reducing energy consumption at the same time, and thus the environmental impact of maintenance activities.

“Once again, Thales supports Brescia Infrastructure in the technological evolution of its infrastructure, with the installation of an essential system to process on-board video feeds in real time, thus increasing passenger security”, Carlo Piacenza, Transport Domain Director of Thales Italia said.

The network of Brescia Metro has a length of 14 km served by 17 stations including one depot and is operated by 18 trains. It provides transport connections between the north and south districts of the city, and is a fundamental pillar of the urban plan for sustainable mobility in Brescia.
