Under a EUR 182 million contract with Polish national infrastructure manager Polskie Linie Kolejowe, Thales will implement ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 on two lines, which covers 785 km of rail systems, 41 stations and seven Local Control Centres.
On the E20 line, Thales will design and deliver the ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 on 650 km, 25 stations and five Local Control Centres (Mińsk Mazowiecki, Błonie, Opalenica, Zbąszynek, Rzepin). The second line which will benefit Thales’ solution is E30, covering 135 km, including 16 stations and two Local Control Centres (Tarnów and Rzeszów).
The completion of these projects will allow trains to reach speeds of 160 km/h. Because of the improvements to both lines, trains will travel in total safety even taking the increased speeds into account.
PKP PLK awarded Thales the two contracts at the beginning of this year envisaging the two main lines. The E20 Kunowice-Terespol crosses Poland from Germany to Belarus borders and excludes the Warsaw node and the E30 links Kraków and Rzeszów, in Southern Poland.
Poland is implementing a comprehensive ERTMS deployment programme which envisages the installation of ERTMS/ETCS on 3400 km of railway network by 2025. Until now, the ERTMS/ETCS was deployed on 331 km of railways. At the end of 2016, PKP PLK announced PLN 1 billion (EUR 232 million) for the construction of the ERTMS/ETCS infrastructure system on 1000 km of railway lines. The tenders concerned the implementation of the system on Kunowice – Terespol, Łowicz – Łuków and Podłęże – Rzeszów lines, as part of TEN-T core network.
