TfL launches tender on tram automatic braking system

On May 14, Transport for London has published contract notice on the Official Journal of the European Journal (OJEU) for the installation of a new safety system on the London Trams network that will automatically apply the brakes should the speed limit be exceeded at high risk locations. Thus, TfL is inviting interested companies, who have innovative solutions to meet the specification, to send their offer until June 13, 2018.
The contract includes the design, supply, installation of Physical prevention of over-speeding system to the London trams fleet of trams numbering 35 trams. The system to be supplied need to bring the trams to a full-service break stop and a minimum Safety integrity level (SIL) of 2. The new system will initially be configured to priority locations as suggested by the Rail Accident Investigations Branch (RAIB) but will have the flexibility to be introduced elsewhere on the tram network.
The new system will automatically bring a moving tram to a controlled stop if it were to exceed the speed limit at a designated location. The system would also automatically alert the operations control centre.
The contract will be awarded by the end of the year. The contract will estimated to commence in October 2018 and it should be completed in 2023. TfL says that the new system will be installed and in operation by the end of 2019, including a period of training and familiarisation with tram drivers ahead of it becoming fully operational.
