The Polish infrastructure manager, PKP PLK, launched a tender for the modernisation of Czyżew – Białystok rail section, the last rail connection on the modernized railway line from Warsaw to the capital of Podlasie. The Czyżew-Białystok section is part of the future Rail Baltica, offering regional, interregional and international links along the North Sea – Baltic Core Network Corridor.
The project is estimated at EUR 371.7 million, of which EUR 283.25 million funding is provided by the EU through the Connecting Europe Facility.
The project envisages the modernisation of the 71-km line between Czyżew and Białystok the instalation of ERTMS, the construction of 19 two-level crossings and the reconstruction of 8 railway bridges. A modern local traffic control center in Bialystok, 19 viaducts and 10 underground passages will be also constructed.
The platforms at 12 stops and 6 stations will be reconstructed and will be adapted adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility. New shelters, benches, information systems and smart lightening systems will be installed. At the stations, the railway tracks will be also modernised and new traction network and railway traffic control devices will be installed. Due to the reconstruction of the track layout more trains will be able to pass through the stations.
Under the project, a new stop will be constructed at Bialystok Zielone Wzgórza and a new platform at the Białystok station. The new facility will be located next to the station, enabling quick transfer to public transport, including suburban connections. All platforms on the station will be rebuilt and roofed, the pedestrian bridge will be replaced by an underground passage.
Works on this section of Czyżew – Białystok will begin next year and the completion is planned at the end of 2022.
The project will allow trains to run at speeds of 200 km/h.
