Lithuanian Railways has announced an international tender for the construction of the second line on Livintai-Gaižiūnai section as part of Vilnius-Klaipeda railway line.
The total budget of the project is EUR 75 million and the contract will be awarded under a negotiated procedure. According to Lithuanian Railways, the project will be co-financed by the European Union.
The project envisages the reconstruction of a 10.7 km of existing track and the construction of the 10.7 km second track, the reconstruction of the existing bridges and passes, the upgrading of the electricity system, as well as the signalling and communication systems.
By 2022 all construction works are expected to be completed.
“To meet growing demand and to integrate Lithuanian railways into the EU’s railway network, we are carrying out modernisation and development projects. By implementing this project, we will continue to develop the TEN-T network in Lithuania, which will increase traffic safety, reduce transport costs, environmental pollution and noise levels,” Karolis Sankovski, the Director of company’s Railway Infrastructure Directorate said.
After the completion, the passenger trains will be able to run at speeds of 160 km/h, and freight trains, of up to 120 km/h. In addition, the axle load will be increased from 22.5 tonnes, to 25 tonnes.
The project will increase IX Corridor traffic capacity on Vilnius-Klaipėda section, to Klaipėda Port.
