Porto metro expansion programme is continuing as the company has announced two tenders which have a total value of EUR 365 million and includes the construction of a new line and the expansion of an existing line. April 28th is the deadline for the submission of the proposals, and it is expected that the winners will be announced in June.
The two projects have an approved budget of EUR 407 million supported by the Environmental Fund and European funds under the Operational Programme for Sustainability and Efficient Use of Resources (POSEUR). It is managed by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action.
Both contracts are expected to take place between 2020 and 2023 and include the construction of 6 km of metro lines and 7 stations.
The projects involve the construction of the Circular Line (Rosa Line) and the extension of the Yellow Line. The Rosa Line project envisages the construction of a new line between São Bento rail station and Casa da Música station. The project is expected to be completed within 42 months.
The Yellow Line will be extended by 3 km from Santo Ovídio to Vila d’Este and would be completed within 34 months. The project has a total value of EUR 169 million, of which EUR 107 million was covered from the Cohesion Fund.
For the development of the metro transport, Porto Metro has also signed a EUR 49.6 million contract with CRRC Tangshan for the delivery of 18 vehicles.
According to the studies, the metro expansion programme would bring an additional annual ridership of 10 million passengers, which will result in a positive environmental and economy impact.
The expansion of Porto metro network will provide reliable transport connections between the main centers of the National Health Service of the metropolitan area, including to the education institutions. In addition, the metro will reach the areas of high population density, such as the Vila d’Este, in Vila Nova de Gaia, an important urban area.
