Infraestruturas de Portugal has announced a EUR 36 million tender for the electrification of Cascais Line (Linha de Cascais).
Within the scope of the contract, the migration of the current electrification system is foreseen, from 1500 V to 25 kV, which makes it possible to harmonise the operating conditions of this line with the rest of the national railway network.
Through the implementation of the project, more than EUR 1 million energy costs will be reduced by Comboios de Portugal (CP) with the operation of the service.
The project covers the construction of seven diagonal crossroad structures, the layout modification at Oeiras and Cascais stations and the construction of a new rail connection to the Carcavelos rolling stock depot.
The modernisation of Cascais Line covers the construction of a traction energy system including a new electric traction substation in Sete Rios to replace the existing 1.5 kV DC electrification system. This will result in 50 % energy savings.
Under the project, three new systems will be installed – the signalling system, ETCS L2, and the communication and information system. Video surveillance and passenger information systems will be installed at the existing stations and stops which will be also upgraded to make them safer and more user-friendly. This will include changes to platforms, signage, power supply and lighting.
The current electrical power and signalling system on the Lisbon-Cascais line is completely different to the rest of Portugal’s railway network. The trains that run on the line are used exclusively for this section, which limits railway operations. The project will ensure that the infrastructure on the line is interoperable and integrated with what is in place in the rest of the country. This will allow for the introduction of new trains at a later stage
The 25 km Cascais line provides commuter transport services between Lisbon, Oeiras, and Cascais. The modernisation of Linha de Cascais is co-financed by POSEUR (Operational Programme for Sustainability and Efficient Use of Resources) under the Portugal 2020 programme aiming at environmental sustainability and economic increase. In 2020, the project has received EUR 50 million European financing through the Cohesion Fund.
