The Czech rail infrastructure manager, Správa železnic (SŽ) has announced a tender for construction works on the section between Nezamyslice and Kojetín, on the Brno – Přerov rail line.
The construction should begin in June 2025, and it will be completed according to the plan in December 2028. The estimated total costs exceed CZK 7.7 billion (EUR 303.7 million).
Works cover the construction of the second track and will allow increased speeds of up to 200 km/h, the removal of all level crossings, and modernisation of the platforms which will provide barrier-free access to passenger with reduced mobility. They will be also adapted for convenient boarding of trains.
The reconstruction of the first section is expected from the middle of next year to the end of 2028.
The reconstructed section is approximately 10 km long, and works will also include the construction of a 744-metre-long Němčický tunnel, which will lead under the Kozlov hill – on the border of the districts of Semily in the Liberec region and Jičín in the Hradec Králové region. The project also includes the construction of 8 new railway bridges, the longest of which will be 122 metres across the valley of the Žlebůvka stream.
The winner of the contract will be also responsible for the construction of two new stops with barrier-free access, one to replace the cancelled Němčice nad Hanou station. Both stops will have parking spaces for cars and bike racks. In the event of operational emergencies, it will be possible to cross from one track to another at the new Hruška branch, which will be located in the middle of the modernised section.
Both existing crossings will be cancelled, in Němčice due to the relocation of the railway line to a new position, in Měrovice it will be replaced by a new bypass road. Part of the project also includes partial realignments of existing roads that collide with the new railway line.
The affected municipalities will be protected by new anti-noise walls. As part of the construction, the connection of the AC and DC power supply system will also be moved from Nezamyslice to Přerov. The European ETCS and the GSM-R radio system will be installed on the track.
In 2023, SŽ has awarded a EUR 22.7 million design contract for the modernisation and double tracking of a 20 km section along the Brno – Přerov rail line. The global project is split into five sections totalling more than 47 km and covers modernisation and double-track construction, as well as ETCS deployment. When entirely completed, in 2031, the project will reduce journey time between Brno and Přerov to only 30 minutes and will increase transport capacity and safety.
The entire project is funded by the EU through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), as well as from the national budget under the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
Under the CEF 2015 calls for proposals, Czechia secured EUR 16.3 million funding out of the EUR 19.2 million eligible cost for the development of preparatory studies to modernise some selected sections along Brno–Přerov railway line. One of the sections, with a length of 25 km, links Nezamyslice and Přerov, excluding Přerov junction, which is a bottleneck along the line Brno–Přerov line in terms of insufficient capacity as it is a single track, it faces speed limits to maximum up to 90 km/h and does not respond to interoperability requirements. For this project, for which studies should be completed in June 2024, SŽ launched the construction and modernisation tender.
Under the global project, SŽ is also to upgrade Přerov railway junction for which a EUR 33.1 million CEF funding was secured for works under the 2016 call for proposals. EUR 42.36 million was the eligible value of the second phase of the project which will increase capacity improve safety and ensure interoperability of the railway line. The global project Přerov railway junction is a major bottleneck on the EU core network and will improve efficiency and quality of long-distance passenger as well as freight transport connections between Czechia and the EU countries.
Brno – Přerov rail will be transformed into a fast connection, as part of Czechia’s rail strategy to develop railway transport, including the high-speed lines, and from Přerov, the line will be continued to Ostrava as a high-speed line which will be connected to Katowice, in Poland and to Vien, in Austria, and is part of the Baltic – Adriatic core network corridor.
