Discussions between the Tehran municipality and Japanese, Chinese and European investors are ongoing for the provision of funding for three metro lines (8, 9 and 10) and two tramways in Iran.
Each of the planned metro lines will be about 30 kilometres. The total investment required for the lines could reach USD 5.8 billion, or an estimated USD 65 million per kilometre, inclusive of the cost of construction, rolling stock and systems.
Tehran Metro is a rapid transit system serving Tehran, the capital city of Iran. Four lines (lines 1, 2, 4 and 5) of the metro are operational while two lines (lines 3 and 7) are still under construction. The system is owned and operated by Tehran Urban and Suburban Railway.
The design for the metro/tramway lines and stations have been completed. Once funding is obtained, the government is looking at a three-year execution timeline. The government in Tehran said it hopes to finalise funding deals within the next 12 months. It is expected that contractors from the country providing the funding will be awarded the main deal for each line.
The metro network is currently 120km long. Upon completion of all the lines, the system will reach a length of 430km.
