Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani officially launched the electrification of Tehran-Mashhad railway. The USD 2 billion involves the electrification of 926 km line linking Tehran to the northeastern shrine city of Mashhad.
The project is scheduled to be implemented over the course of 42 months and will shorten travel time between the two cities to 6 hours from the current minimum of 12 hours. Once completed, the rail route could accommodate electric trains running at 200 km.
The financing of the project is assured as China and Iran tasked a consortium of Iranian and Chinese partners to embark on the project.
