The technical and economic indicators show that total investments for “Rehabilitation of Braşov-Simeria railway, part of the Rhine-Danube Corridor, for trains to travel at maximum speeds of 160 km/h, Braşov – Sighişoara section” amount to RON 8.4 billion (EUR 1.8 billion).
The draft Government Decision for the approval of the technical-economic indicators was published on 5 December on the web page of the Ministry of Transport. The deadline for receiving proposals or observations is 16 December.
The project on the rehabilitation of Brașov – Sighișoara rail section plans to develop the interoperability of the rail infrastructure along the Rhine-Danube Corridor and to improve the quality of rail services by upgrading the rail infrastructure and increase the maximum operational speed to 160 km/h for passenger trains and to 120 km/h for freight trains. This project is included in the General Transport Master Plan, August 2016 variant.
The rehabilitation of this section of 114 km will reduce travel time from 101 minutes to 47 minutes for passenger long-distance trains.
The investment is ensured through the Grant Agreement Under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and from the state budget through the budget of the Ministry of Regional Development, Public Administration and European Funds in the limit of the amounts stipulated annually with this destination, according to the public investment programmes approved under the law.
