The Tanzanian Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication has announced that they are in the process of selecting a contractor to initiate construction on a standard gauge railway (SGR) line that will run from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma and Mwanza.
The announcement comes shortly after the government signed a USD 7.6 million loan agreement with the Export-Import Bank of China for the upgrade of the country’s railway infrastructure.
The Tanzanian SGR project involves the construction of a 2,190km railway line that will eventually form part of the East African Railways Master Plan, linking Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, with the intention of linking the line to Ethiopia’s SGR project currently underway.
Ministry officials have indicated that they plan to announce the selected contractor in the next few weeks and hope to initiate construction within the current financial year.
