The Board of Directors of the Czech rail infrastructure manager SŽ approved the establishment of a high-speed rail unit which will be responsible for the preparation, construction and operation of high-speed lines (VRT). This step is related to the ongoing work on this new railway network.
The decision follows the infrastructure manager’s intention to create a more efficient management of high-speed rail strategy implementation.
The appointed designers are currently preparing the detailed documentation for zoning decisions (DÚR) for 5 sections of new high-speed lines. SŽ is currently searching for suppliers of these materials for the next 3 sections.
The high-speed rail unit will oversee and implement country’s VRT strategy covering the construction of a 700 km network which will allow trains to run at speeds of up to 300 km/h. The network will also include high-speed railway terminals, for which the railway administration announces architectural and urban planning competitions.
Czechia’s high-speed network includes the development of five lines, the so-called “fast connections”. The VRT 1.2 covers the construction of the Prague – Brno – Ostrava and Brno – Břeclav lines expected to become the busiest rail corridors in the Czech Republic as it will connect the three largest cities in the country and will also serve Jihlava, Olomouc and other regional centres. Prague – Brno – Ostrava / Břeclav will form the basis of the high-speed railway network in Central Europe and will also use the connections to Budapest or Warsaw. The project includes the development of Prague East terminal for which the designer has been selected.
VRT 4 will provide high-speed rail link between Prague, Ústí nad Labem and Dresden which will be connected to the Western Europe high-speed network through Germany. The construction of the first 48.5 km section is expected to start in 2027. The project includes the construction of two passenger terminals, one in the south of the Ústí nad Labem region – Roudnice nad Labem – and the second one will be constructed near Ústí nad Labem West railway station.
The VRT 5 will be constructed on the Prague – Hradec Králové / Pardubice – Wrocław route which is expected to be implemented at the same time with the Prague – Brno high-speed project because the Prague-Běchovice – Poříčany section is common for both lines.
