The Sydney Metro Northwest rail project is on target to be delivered at least AUD 500 million (USD 384.4 million) under budget. The last section of 52.5 kilometres of railway tracks has been installed, ahead of services starting in the first half of 2019.
“This is another huge step forward in delivering new metro rail to Sydney next year, revolutionising how we get around our great city. The major contracts for Sydney Metro Northwest were awarded in 2013 and 2014 and the project budget was set at AUD 8.3 billion [USD 6.38 billion]. Project costs are constantly refined during the construction process and, through good management, we’ve been able to realise significant savings – which will be used to deliver the AUD 20 billion-plus [USD 15 billion] Sydney Metro expansion,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.
Sydney Metro Northwest, formerly the North West Rail Link, is the first stage of Sydney Metro and will be the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia. The rapid transit link to the north-western suburbs of Sydney is delivering eight new railway stations and 4000 commuter car parking spaces to Sydney’s growing North West.
