Sydney Metro has launched second stage tender

Sydney-metro_Sydney_Metro_TBM_Sydney_Harbour_artist_impressionThe tendering process for the construction of the twin-bore tunnel beneath Sydney Harbour for Stage 2 of Sydney Metro has been formally launched.
Sydney Metro City & Southwest will extend the new high-capacity metro line from Chatswood in Sydney’s Lower North Shore, beneath Sydney Harbour and CBD and onto Bankstown.
Described as “Australia’s biggest public transport project”, the first phase of the scheme, Sydney Metro Northwest, is already well underway. This first stage will connect Rouse Hill – a north-western suburb of Sydney – with Chatswood.
Tunnelling work on this phase of project was completed in January and it is on course to open in the first few months of 2019. Transport for New South Wales (NSW) plans to award the tunnelling contract in the middle of 2017.
“The first of five tunnel boring machines will be in the ground before the end of 2018 to deliver new twin railway tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham, as we get on with the job of opening Sydney Metro City & Southwest by 2024”, NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said.
