The Czech rail infrastructure manager Správa železnic has selected Sudop Praha to develop a study on the implementation of 5G technology on Brno – Bratislava rail line.
The implementation of the entire system on the cross-border section from Brno to Bratislava will be addressed by the study, under the awarded CZK 14 million (EUR 572,960) contract. The study will also include an economic evaluation of the entire project.
The study will be prepared in cooperation with the Slovak Railways (Železnice Slovenskej republiky) as part of the cooperation confirmed by the consortium agreement from July last year.
The grant agreement for the project entitled Study of the implementation of 5G/FRMCS on the Brno (CZ) – Bratislava (SK) railway corridor was concluded a year ago by Správa železnic with European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA).
The project is co-financed by the European Union from the Connecting Europe Facility CEF Digital. Eligible expenses amount to EUR 600,000, half of which is covered by subsidies.
In December 2022, the European Commission has unveiled the 15 selected projects that received CEF Digital grants under the first call for proposals, to accelerate the deployment of 5G connectivity infrastructures along the main transport paths throughout Europe. The project “5G Brno – Bratislava: 5G/FRMCS implementation on the railway corridor” obtained a EUR 300,000 co-financing for the development of the study addressing the implementation of 5G and FRMCS communication systems and prepare for Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) taking into account the existing communication environment and requirements implemented on the transport path.
When proposing the implementation of the study results, Správa železnic will assess the current state of 5G coverage and its quality outside the railway corridors and will focus on the cross border section of the Brno line – Lanžhot – state Kúty.
The construction of infrastructure for 5G is important for railways with regard to the planned radio systems for traffic control. In the future, the current GSM-R network will be replaced by the FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) standard, which is built on 5G technology.
Správa železnic is looking for ways to use modern 5G and FRMCS technologies to implement on the railway network and the installation on the Brno – Bratislava rail line is the first step to introduce the digital technology. The implementation of the works will also improve the quality of voice and data services for passengers on railway corridors.
