Strabag wins contract in the Czech Republic

rail modernisationThe Czech rail infrastructure manager SZ awarded a Strabag Rail (89%) consortium a rail modernisation contract for the 1.3 km long section of the railway between Děčín východ and Prostřední Žleb stations in Děčín in the north of the country, in the area of Elbe River.

EUR 41.5 million is the value of the contract and is carried out in a consortium with local partner DT Mostárna.

The work will start in August and the commencement of the main construction works is planned for this year, while the completion of the entire construction in expected in November 2023.

One of the main parts of the works is the reconstruction of the 265 metre bridge over the Elbe River that needs to have its original steel supports replaced. The bridge was constructed in 1916 and is already on the verge of service life. It will therefore be replaced by a new steel structure with a lower deck, reinforced with longitudinal and transverse reinforcements, and a continuous rail bed. Its layout will respect the appearance of the original structure, while meeting all current standards and operational requirements of rail transport.

As part of the construction the 395 metre long Děčín tunnel will also be completely rehabilitated. The railway superstructure and substructure will be replaced, and the traction line will be repaired. The rail modernisation project also includes the renewal of security and communication equipment. The track will remain single-track even after optimisation, and the speed limit on the bridge will be eliminated. In the process, the stone vault will be replaced by a reinforced concrete vault over a length of 120 m. The contract also includes the construction of the new track and substructure, the overhead lines and a noise barrier, as well as work on the new track safety equipment and the communication system.

Thanks to the renewal of the track superstructure and the establishment of approximately 700 meters of noise barriers in places where the track passes through urban areas, the noise load will be reduced along the reconstructed rail line.
