Stadler wins its first contract in Slovenia

Slovenske Železnice, Slovenia’s railway operator, awarded Stadler a EUR 170 million contract for the supply of 26 single and double-decker multiple units, with an option for 26 additional trains. Under the contract Stadler will deliver 11 four-car Flirt EMUs, 5 three-car Flirt DMUs and 10 three-car double-decker Kiss EMUs. These very different types of train are being engineered in a way that allows mixed compositions within the fleet.
“The signing of this contract with Stadler is the first step toward modernising rail passenger transport in Slovenia. With new modern trains we are taking a step forward in the renewal of our fleet and as a result in the satisfaction of our customers,” General Manager of Slovenske Železnice, Dusan Mes, said.
The 11 Flirt EMUs are designed as regional trains to be operated at a maximum speed of 160 km/h. They are 80.7 metres long and 2.82 metres wide, with a capacity of 235 seats.
The 5 Flirt DMUs are capable to run at speeds of 140 km/hour. With 70.4 metres long and 2.82 metres wide, the trains can accommodate 171 seats and offer standing room for an additional 167 people.
The 10 Kiss trains are designed for speeds of 160 km/h and they have a capacity of 292 seats and offer standing room for an additional 264 people.
The interior of all these types of train is also designed for passengers with reduced mobility according to TSI PRM regulations and they each have special spaces for five bicycles.
The traction of the trains is ensured by two powered bogies, situated directly under the engine compartment in the end car.
This is Stadler’s first contract awarded by Slovenia. In the late 1990s, Stadler submitted a bid for a contract to deliver 30 multiple units to Slovenia, but lost out to the competition after a contested tender. “It delights us even more that 20 years later, our second attempt has been successful and we have managed to break into the Slovenian market”, Peter Spuhler, CEO of Stadler said.
