At the end of 2021, Serbian Railways (Srbija Voz) and Stadler signed an agreement for the delivery of 18 innovative Flirt electric multiple units for operation on regional routes throughout Serbia.

This further purchase is the third contract signed by Stadler with Serbian Railways and was made after the first order of 21 Flirts in 2014 and the second for three Kiss train fleets in 2015.

Designed in Czechia, manufactured in Poland

The vehicles were designed by engineers from the Stadler engineering office in Prague. The manufacturing site is the Stadler plant in Siedlce, Poland. Eight of the 18 vehicles ordered have already been delivered to Serbia.

The first two units are currently being tested on the Serbian railway infrastructure. The process involves observing passenger journeys (30 days or 15,000 km).

Upon successful completion of the test, the vehicles will be officially handed over to the carrier. Completion of the entire order is scheduled for the end of April 2025.

The Flirt vehicles that will enrich the carrier’s fleet are well known and very popular among passengers. This best-selling model from Stadler has already been sold in around 2,640 units and is in operation in 23 countries worldwide.

“The Stadler company is proud to be part of the renewal of the Serbian Railways fleet. The vehicles will significantly boost the comfort for Serbian passengers – this is a reason for satisfaction for us. I am pleased to present the Flirt model for Serbia to the audience at the Rail Business Days in Ostrava. The Flirt train, our bestseller, is generating a lot of interest from carriers and I think it is very attractive for the service of passenger transport operators in the Czech Republic as well as in other countries in this part of Europe,” Željko Davidović, Sales Director for Central and Eastern Europe said.

Aluminum trains

The Flirt electric multiple unit for Serbia features a lightweight aluminum structure that meets STI and impact resistance standards (EN 15227) and operates at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

The vehicle’s design emphasises low energy consumption and ease of operation. It was built with environmentally friendly materials, including water-based paints and an HVAC system for air conditioning.

The single-decker train has spacious entrance areas, allowing passengers to get on and off easily, especially people with reduced mobility or in wheelchairs, bicycles or pushchairs.

The vehicle site is equipped with air conditioning, indoor and outdoor CCTV surveillance cameras, as well as audio and video information systems. It has modern toilets and a platform to help disabled people get on and off.

To increase safety and security on board, passengers can speak directly to the driver using an intercom.

The vehicles consist of four units, which are 80.7 m long, can accommodate up to 473 passengers and have 244 seats. There is a first class area with comfortable seats as well as areas for passengers with reduced mobility.
