Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGBahn) and Stadler signed a CHF 148.5 million (EUR 139.85 million) contract for the supply of 12 three-car rack and pinion trainsets.
The order is part of a two-stage framework contract for the delivery of 27 EMUs under an investment of CHF 300 million (EUR 282.5 million).
In the second stage, 15 new trains will be acquired, under the modernisation of MGBahn’s train fleet programme.
It is expected that the new trains will be delivered by 2028.
The so-called Orion low-floor trains will be energy efficient and will provide Wi-Fi connection. They will have special places for wheelchair users and for luggage and sports equipment.
As they be able to run in both double and triple-traction formation, they can provide enough space for up to 990 passengers, with 444 seats, of which 66 first class seats.
The new trains are able to operate on the entire 144 km network between Zermatt and Disentis, handling the maximum gradient of 181‰ between Göschenen and Andermatt.
The Orion trains use lightweight vehicle materials, they have energy-efficient traction components and low energy consumption due to oil-free dry-type transformers.
The first trains will be delivered and tested in summer 2022. Starting 2023 winter timetable, all 12 multiple units should enter regular passenger service.
