SNCB signs agreement for up to 50 Traxx locomotives

Traxx passenger locomotivesAlstom and Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Belges (SNCB) signed a framework agreement for the supply of up to 50 third-generation electric Traxx passenger locomotives. The firm order covers the delivery of 24 locomotives worth EUR 120 million. The deliveries will start in 2026.

The new locomotives will be used for domestic and cross – border rail services on the electrified networks in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany, including on a number of high-speed lines. They are designed for use with the various electrification systems across such as 1.5 kV DC in the Netherlands 3 kV DC in Belgium, 15 kV AC in Germany and 25 kV AC in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. In addition, they will be equipped with the ETCS signalling system as well as all the required conventional signalling systems (TBL1+ in Belgium, ATB in the Netherlands and LZB/PZB in Germany.

The Traxx passenger locomotives of third generation is able to run at 200 km/h providing increased flexibility and comfort. The vehicles meet the most recent requirements of the TSI security standards. It also comes with a higher energy efficiency and its maintenance intervals have been extended by 33% to improve availability and reduce maintenance burden.

The new Traxx locomotive is designed at Mannheim site and is manufactured at the plant in Kassel, with bogies coming from Siegen (Germany) and the body structures are manufactured in Wroclaw. The national signalling systems for the four countries and the level 2 ETCS system will be supplied by Alstom’s site at Charleroi.

In 2020 and 2021, Alstom won two important contracts in Belgium. In December 2020, A EUR 445 million was signed with SNCB for the supply of 204 double-deck M7 multifunctional coaches. One year later, SNCB ordered an additional fleet of 98 double-deck M7 coaches.

The contracts are part of a framework agreement signed in 2015 for the supply of 1,362 M7 rail cars of which 747 train cars are already ordered.
