Škoda wins EMU contract in Bulgaria

Bulgarian rolling stock

A consortium of Škoda Transportation and Škoda Wagon won the Bulgarian rolling stock contract covering the supply of new electric multiple units.

The consortium has been selected to supply 20 single-deck EMUs including the provision of maintenance for a period of 15 years and staff training. BGN 511.4 million (EUR 256 million) is the value of the contract under which the trains will be delivered within the next two years (24 months). The delivery of the rolling stock is funded by the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan.

Second in the ranking is the consortium BUL20EMU comprising Alstom Transport SA, Alstom Ferroviaria SpA and RVP Invest EOOD, with a proposed bid price of BGN 659 million (EUR 330 million).

The new electric multiple unit trains will have a capacity of at least 300 seats. The trains will be used for the long distance routes across the country, such as Sofia – Burgas, Sofia – Varna and Sofia – Ruse.

Another Bulgarian rolling stock contract was awarded to Pesa Bydgoszcz, as previously announced by the Ministry of Transport, after Stadler withdrew from the procedure to deliver new electric multiple units. Tus the ministry of Transport and Communication awarded the contract to Pesa Bydgoszcz. The manufacturer will deliver 35 multiple unit trains under the Public Procurement Act. “Stadler Polska ranked first, withdrew from the procedure and requested the termination of the contract for the delivery of 7 double-decker trains financed with Recovery and Sustainability Plan funds,” the Ministry says.

Stadler was selected in July 2024 to deliver the 35 EMUs to BDZ Passenger Transport but withdrew due to contract financing problems as well as other issues.

It was announced that for this bid, Pesa Bydgoszcz, Alstom, Škoda and Stadler Polska have submitted their bids. BGN 1.1 billion (EUR 550.67 million) excluding VAT, was the budget for the purchase of the new EMUs including the provision of maintenance services for a period of 15 years.
