On January 30, Warsaw Metro and Škoda Transportation – Škoda Vagonka consortium signed the contract for the supply of up to 45 six-car metro trains, valuated at CZK 8 billion (EUR 311.76 million). The first of the new metro trains will enter services in the second half of 2021, followed by the delivery of the remaining vehicles within 53 months.
The contract also includes spare parts supply, a simulator, extended warranty and training. The basic order envisages the delivery of 37 metro trains, while Warsaw Metro will be able to exercise an option by ordering another 8 trains.
The new aluminum-body trains will have a total length of 118.2 meters with each car having a length of 20 meters. The trains can transport 1500 passengers at a maximum speed of 90 km/h.
The metro trains will be equipped with passenger information system and facilities for passengers with disabilities.
Great emphasis was placed on the safety and comfort of passengers and operators in the development and design of the metro trains. The trains are designed according to EN and UIC standards and meet the latest technical knowledge and requirements in the field of fire safety as well. The trains ensure safe operation with minimal operating costs. Škoda Transportation cooperates with Czech and Polish universities and engineering offices on the development of modern metro trains.
“In addition to the construction of the metro expansion, we are also buying new trains to support the growing ridership. All these projects are supported by the European funding,” said Warsaw Mayor, Rafał Trzaskowski, at the signing ceremony.
The metro procurement is funded by the EU under two phases of the project on the construction of the second metro line.
Currently, the city is carrying out the construction works for the second metro line and investigates the possibilities for the third metro line.
