Comboios de Portugal (CP) has shortlisted six bidders to supply a 117 regional and suburban train fleet which is the largest tender in company’s history.
The six shortlisted are:
- A consortium comprising Alstom, Bombardier Transportation Portugal, and Domingos Da Silva Teixeira (DST);
- A consortium of CAF and CAF Turnkey & Engineering;
- CRRC Tangshan;
- Hitachi Rail;
- A consortium of Talgo and Siemens Mobility; and
- Stadler Rail Valencia.
The competition jury will proceed with the analysis of the applications with a view to their qualification, and all candidates who meet the technical and financial capacity requirements set out in the parts of the procedure will be admitted to the next stage.
The qualification decision will be taken within 44 working days after the deadline for submitting applications.
The candidates who are admitted will be invited to submit their proposals for the supply of the trains and the construction of a rolling stock maintenance workshop.
In July 2021, the Government of Portugal has approved the tender for the procurement of the regional and suburban train fleet estimated at EUR 819 million.
62 electric multiple units will be designed for suburban traffic of which 34 on the Cascais line replacing the 29 existing trains, 16 EMUs for the rail network of Lisbon metropolitan area and 12 electric trains for the rail services on three railway lines in Porto metropolitan area. 55 EMUs will be supplied for regional transport services. 22 Flirt regional trains will be supplied by Stadler under a EUR 158 million contract signed in October 2020 which also includes the delivery of maintenance services for 4 years and staff training. Stadler will deliver 10 EMUs and 12 bi–modal multiple units reaching speeds of 160 km/h and 140 km/h respectively.
According to CP’s plans, 139 new EMUs will replace the obsolete equipment to meet the increased traffic demand in two metropolitan areas.
