Bucharest General Mayor Gabriela Firea met with Romanian Transport Minister Felix Stroe on 2 November to discuss about the possibility that Metrorex would be taken over by Bucharest Municipality, the implementation of the single ticket for Bucharest-Ilfov area, the modernisation of the Capital’s centre, Domnesti Passageway work situation, as well as about other aspects aimed to improve traffic conditions in Bucharest.
The representatives of the two institutions met to discuss how to improve the efficiency of public transport in Bucharest-Ilfov region.
“We have met to identify rapid and efficient solutions to solve the problems that have lingered for so long. The local and central authorities must set the foundation for a clear partnership with concrete results for the citizens. The local authority is entirely responsible for planning the local and regional public service, according to the Romanian Constitution, but also the norms imposed by the European legislation. Since the beginning of my mandate, I have discussed will all governments about the possibility to transfer Metrorex from the Ministry of Transport to Bucharest Municipality, but also to transfer Bucharest belt to the Municipality. In all the European capitals, these are managed by local authorities which can act efficiently and seamlessly to upgrade local and regional public transport. Thus, the Urban Development Municipal Plan – this strategic, very important document for the development of Bucharest-Ilfov region clearly stipulates that the metro has to be managed by the local public authority”, declared General Mayor Gabriela Firea.
Romanian Minister of Transport, Felix Stroe, said the ministry fully supported the metropolitan infrastructure projects.
“We give all our support to Bucharest, we want to solve all problems related to the ministry I run, because we all work for our citizens. I asked Metrorex Board to urge procedures so that we could have a single ticket for Bucharest, like all the other European Union capitals”, Minister Stroe commented on the implementation of the single transport ticket.
Also, the parties discussed the establishment of intermodal nodes (bus terminal, tram line terminal, buses, metro, park & ride facilities) at city access points and about moving bus terminals from central areas.
Also, the parties agreed to transfer several terrains from the administration of the Romanian Ministry of Transport (occupied by off-service railways, rail stations located on Bucharest Municipality metropolitan area) to the administration of Bucharest Municipality to be transformed into streets, parks or community centres (for ex. Liniei Street, Progresu Street).
